Vegan Hazelnut Hot Chocolate + a Healthy Supplies Giveaway!

Vegan Hazelnut Hot Chocolate //

Hey 2017! How ya doing? We’ve been waiting for you! Thanks for showing up, let’s make this year a cracker, yeah?! I hope everyone had a banger of a Christmas and a sparkly new year?! I spent some much-needed quality time with my family, hanging out, playing charades and eating ALL THE sprouts. I had to work between Christmas and New Year, and I’m not gonna lie, it bummed me out, but hey, I like my job and there are worse things to be doing. We had a very quiet evening on New Years Eve, curled up on the sofa under some blankets and watching films. I know everyone has been saying how sucky 2016 was, but amidst the political nightmares, the deaths and the woes, 2016 was really good to me. Continuing this blog has opened up some amazing opportunities for which I am so grateful. We bought our first (non-floating) home, settled into our new suburbs and played house. We even got 2 gorgeous cats that I have fallen head over heals in love with. Yeah, 2016 had some bumps, but it was good to me. I’m excited to see what 2017 will bring.

So I am celebrating the new year with this Vegan Hazelnut Hot Chocolate. I know, my last recipe was chocolate based, but what can I say, I’m a chocolate fanatic. Some of you may have heard of Veganuary – launched in 2014, Veganuary is a global charity that encourages people to go vegan for January. It’s a great idea to help raise awareness of the benefits of becoming vegan. This recipe is an ode to the great cause. If you aren’t ready to go vegan yet, how about committing to Meat Free Monday instead? Small changes make ripples which can spread and grow.

Total time
A rich and nutty drink to sip curled up on the sofa. Makes 2-3 mugs.
Rough Measures:
Recipe type: Drinks
  • 500ml / 2 cups hazelnut milk
  • 40g vegan dark chocolate - broken into pieces
  • 1 heaped tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons hazelnut butter
  • 1 tablespoon date syrup (maple or agave would also work)
  1. In a pan on a low heat, gently simmer the milk. Stir in the chocolate pieces.
  2. Once the chocolate has started to melt, whisk in all other ingredients.
  3. Whisk until hot.
  4. If the mixture looks a little bumpy (from the hazelnut butter) then add to a blender and blend for 20 seconds.
  5. Pour into mugs and enjoy straight away.
I have used home-made hazelnut milk here, there are plenty of recipes online. You can use store bought too. If you don't have hazelnut milk handy, something like hemp or oat milk would work too.

  1. I have a lot of weight to lose so January is my month for making changes. one of which is to make the effort to have 3 healthy meals a day as I am known to skip meals

  2. I’m going to try and work out everyday. Even if it’s just for 10 mins. I really want to be healthy!

  3. My small change is to cook a new recipe from a cook book a week. This way I improve my cooking skills and taste more exciting foods!

  4. More low-carb meals, especially at lunchtime where bought options are limited. Replacing bread with romaine lettuce leaves for sandwiches is my starting point!

  5. I need to lose one more stone in weight to get to my target weight so healthy eating all theway, I lost over 3st last year so I know I can do this

  6. I want to try and eat less dairy

where were the mugs from? I’m also looking for mugs that will fit nicely in ones hand and those look like they would. Thanks.

  7. I plan on trying to see family more, especially now I have my 2nd child so will be trying to visit grandparents more etc.

  8. I’m so glad to hear about Meat Free Monday, because I’m trying to reduce my meat/animal product consumption in the new year. Idk if I can go full vegan, but I’ve seen the way animals for food are raised, and choosing to prevent that seems more humane than ignoring it and noshing on steak once a week.
Thank you for posting the recipe!

  9. It is a very small thing, but I’m getting into the habit of sprinking a little bran on my meals in the hope of introducing more fibre into my diet and to get the metabolism moving 😉 x

  10. This January I resolve to move more. I was in peak condition last June after I trained for an event, and then I let my fitness go. It was a big eye opener to me, and I resolve, this year, to spend more time outdoors. Gorgeous recipe, this, too! 🙂

  11. What a gorgeous hot chocolate recipe – I bet it tastes amazing with the hazelnut butter. Thanks for sharing with #CookBlogShare this week. This January I am planning to swim twice a week, spend more time outside AND do my physio every day (which I have really struggled to manage!).

  12. I’m going to stop trying to multitask about 5 things at once and focus on completing one task at a time!

  13. My small change is to add more fruit and vegetables to my diet. Hopefully with this new habit, eating crisps and chocolate might well happen a bit less!

  14. No small changes for me just bigs ones, I haven’t had drink since New Years Eve, usually drink every weekend and some weekdays. Now drinking 4 pints of water a day, and I’ve joined weightwatchers. Need to shift 3 stone hopefully before the end of the year!

  15. I LOVE nutella and anything chocolate and hazelnut 😀 This sounds amazing! The mugs are so cute, I want!! Great giveaway Sus 🙂

  16. I’m trying to keep a bit better portion control, although I do eat fairly healthy meals the portions are way to big

  17. This hot chocolate sounds amazing! This year is going to be the year I finally reach my SW target for good! Thank you for sharing with #CookBlogShare x

  18. I turned vegan last Veganuary and to celebrate my one-year anniversary with veganism and compassion, I’m giving up Honey (which I was not consciously eliminating).

  19. I’m trying to buy more local and UK produce to help support our country. Im also trying to cut down on waste and cooking everything from scratch xx

  20. I seriously want to lose some weight! I’ve put on a whopping three stone since falling pregnant and having my first baby x

  21. Cutting back on the crisps, we eat way too many in our house, so I am going to buy a set amount each week and when they are gone I won’t replace them until the next week .x

  22. I made a small challenge with myself, to workout at least once each week until the end of the year, or 52 workouts in total, if it happens to be away for a week. So far I did great and I’m sure I will complete the challenge.

  23. To read every night before bed! I am an English teacher and around books all day but hardly ever find time to read for pleasure.

  24. I take each day as they come, I don’t plan one day can be different to the next. Choices might stay choices might change , just getting a positive mind is a start for me .

  25. I want to get fit again after being inactive for quite a long time due to ill health. I have been trying to go running as it gets me out of the house.

Thank You! I love hearing from you all.
